There are 30 sites in the Sheaf valley where water powered mills or workshops once operated. Very little remains of most of these sites although one of them, Abbeydale Works, has been restored and is now Sheffield Industrial Hamlet Museum.
A comprehensive book – “Water Power on the Sheffield Rivers” edited by David Crossley was published jointly by Sheffield Trades Historical Society and University of Sheffield Division of Continuing Education in 1989. A second revised edition, Edited by Christine Ball; David Crossley & Neville Flavell was published by South Yorkshire Industrial Historical Society in 2006.
We have made use of this publication for the starting point of the information about the history of the sites on the Sheaf and Porter.
