Tony Robinson, Phil Harding, Mick Aston and the rest of Channel 4’s Time Team visited Sheffield for a special programme looking at the history and archaeology of steel making in and around the city.

During the visit, the team looked at excavations at two former steel making sites being carried out by Sheffield University’s ARCUS.

The Time Team also visited Sheffield’s Industrial Museums at Kelham Island, Abbeydale Hamlet and Shepherd Wheel.

Phil was shown how crucible steel was made and turned into the source material for cutlery, knives and edge tools. He was helped, by several skilled craftspeople, to carry out the processes involved in the grinding, assembly and finishing of a classic Sheffield “Bowie ” Knife.
