The Porter Brook and its tributary the Mayfield Brook both rise on the moorland high above the south west of Sheffield just west of Fulwood Lane at Ringinglow.

The Porter flows down the steep narrow valley of Porter Clough, whilst the Mayfield Brook flows less steeply through the head of the Mayfield Valley.

The Porter flows down the steep narrow valley of Porter Clough, whilst the Mayfield Brook flows less steeply through the farmland at the head of the Mayfield Valley.

The Mayfield joins the Porter just west of Carr Bridge.

The Porter then flows east on its journey through Fulwood and into Endcliffe Park in Ecclesall. It leaves the park at Hunters Bar and heads through Sharrow.

After flowing past the General Cemetery, the Porter flows between between buildings, in culverts and below the surface in tunnels.

It occasionally surfaces on its way to the Ponds area, making its final appearance as it approaches Sheffield Railway Station.

The Porter Brook joins the River Sheaf out of sight, under the railway station.
