Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th May 2015
You will be able to watch blacksmiths forge hot metal, try your hand at woodturning or lacemaking, enjoy live music, taste the products of the Whirlow Hall Farm BBQ, take part in family activities and tours and visit the craft stalls.
The hamlet’s resident blacksmiths Duncan Edwards and Joe Moore will be demonstrating scythe blade forging, making the first fully hand forged scythe blades at Abbeydale Hamlet since 1933, when the Tyzack’s scythe-works left the hamlet. The demonstration, using entirely traditional methods, will include striking and fire welding, a spectacular process in which tool steel is “sandwiched” between bars of iron.
Not to be missed: The two big water wheels, which have undergone extensive restoration, will be in action during the Forge In.
